The Reading Workshop Mini Lessons start off with launching the Daily 5. The Daily 5 is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently. I hated the busy work that my students were doing while I was with reading groups. Centers are too much work. So I set on a quest to find authentic literacy activities that would engage the students and have them reading on their own. I found a book called “The Daily 5″ by Gail Boushey & Joan Moser. It had exactly what I wanted. I would suggest that you buy the book and read it. They have also written a book called ”Daily CAFE.” CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding vocabulary. It too is an authentic way in which to engage students with strategies and activities that build their reading skills beyond decoding. I will be implementing CAFE (as strategies mini lessons for Reading Workshop) along with the Daily 5 this year. I highly recommend both books.
The Daily 5 components include Read to Self, Work on Writing, Work with Words, Listen to Reading, and Read to Someone. If you want to know more, go to the public portion of their website: http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/main.cfm
These mini lessons are for Reader’s Workshop. The Work on Writing portion is for the Daily 5, NOT Writer’s Workshop.
